ACADEMICS/ADMISSIONS POLICY
It is recommended that students enter St. John School at the earliest grade level possible. The policy at St. John School is that all students who have previously attended another school or who have been home schooled be tested to discover their reading level and competence in math. This enables correct and appropriate placement in class. To acquire admittance to St. John School the following steps are followed before the registrations are reviewed.
1. At least one parent of the child is interviewed.
2. Complete a registration form and pay the registration fee.
3. Students applying for grades one through eight may spend a day in school. During his/her visiting day at school, reading and
math tests are given. If the visit occurs in the summer the child is interviewed and tested by the principal.
4. Copies of all report cards are given to the principal.
5. Parents will then receive a letter of acceptance, notification of child being placed on waiting list, or non-acceptance.
Before a student is accepted, St. John School must have a transcript of the student’s records from the prior school. The first three months of the school year are a period of probation to ascertain if the school can adequately meet the needs of the individual student and that the student is able to adjust to the academic and behavioral climate of the school.
No child will be accepted at St. John School if, in the judgment of the administration of the school, it is felt that the educational/developmental needs of the child cannot be met by this school. Even after admission to St. John School, should it be determined by the principal and/or staff member(s) that a child’s educational/developmental needs are not being met, such a child will not be offered a space in the school the following school year. The principal has the final say in such matters.
St. John will not accept applicants seeking to avoid the orderly implementation of any desegregation plan. Every Catholic child, whether his/her parents are Catholic or not, has a right to a Catholic education, should the child’s needs be able to be met at St. John School as determined by the child’s current teacher and principal, and should the child behave as required by the principal and staff. Neither race nor national origin is to prevent a child from being accepted in the school. Non-Catholic children are eligible provided space is available.
In its admission policy, St. John School does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, creed or national origin. When openings occur, the principal and pastor review the waiting list and call parents of students eligible for admission. Various factors are considered. Some are active membership in St. John parish and the situation of applicants being siblings of students already enrolled at St. John School. The final decision rests with the pastor and principal.
Re-registration of current students for the next school year is necessary on an annual basis for children to remain on the school roster. If the subsequent tuition deposit is not paid then the child is removed form the roster for the next school year in question. Letters reminding parents that their child has lost his/her spot due to the tuition deposit not being paid will no longer be sent. It is important to read the Wednesday letters that contain important information.
